GRAY — Members and guests of the First District Dental Society held an unveiling ceremony for a new, interactive dental health exhibit at Hands On! Discovery Center Saturday evening. The society spearheaded the effort to create and fund the exhibit, which will remain at the center for at least three years.

First District Dental Society President Dr. Rachel Hymes noted Hands On! Discovery Center serves children from four states and 40 school districts and the new “Brush and Floss 2A Smile” exhibit will remain there for at least three years.

Hymes said nearly $40,000 was raised to fund the exhibit, which features a giant-sized set of teeth and gums that children are encouraged to brush and floss with oversized dental care tools. LEDs inside the teeth go from a dull yellow to a bright white as the brushing and flossing progresses.

Hymes said Delta Dental was the largest single donor with funds coming from many members of the society, which has membership from Carter, Greene, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties.

The exhibit was created by Essyx, based on an actual patient’s denture design file provided by Premier Dental Labs.

Hands On! Discovery Center is located at 1212 Suncrest Dr.
