Prep roundup: Virginia High downs North in Ballard Lee Bearcat Tip-Off

BRISTOL — Virginia High had a strong effort of 21 points by Tyler Strong in the 65-55 win over Sullivan North in the third-place game of the Ballard Lee Bearcat Tip-Off on Saturday.

Gavin Austin contributed 17 points and seven rebounds, while Isaac Simcox chimed in with 13 points.

Trailing by 10 early, North rallied to take a 30-29 halftime lead.

Trey Williams accounted for 17 points and three assists, while Christian Hill recorded 12 points and eight rebounds. Isaiah Pruitt came through with nine points. Bryant Herron pulled down seven rebounds.

Friday games

Gate City 78, Oak Hill Red 54

GATE CITY — Bradley Dean posted a 41-point effort to lead Gate City to a victory over Oak Hill Red in a VHSL benefit game on Friday night.

Dean’s total included nine goals from 3-point range. Leading by two at the half, the Blue Devils pulled away throughout the second half.

Andrew Hensley added 15 points, including three 3-pointers, for Gate City, which also got nine points from Jon Compton and eight from Jonathan Sallee.

Owen Chen scored 15 to lead Oak Hill Red. Justin Banks and Thomas Reid each finished with eight.

Twin Springs 55, Council 20

COUNCIL — Connor Lane went 5-of-6 from 3-point range to finish with 21 points and outscore the entire Cobras team.

Christian Hinkle added nine points for the Titans and Justin Reed came through with seven.

Bailey Harns led Council with six points.

Girls

Sullivan Central 60, Daniel Boone 50

BLOUNTVILLE — Macy McClellan scored 15 points to lead the Lady Cougars in a balanced attack against the Lady Trailblazers.

Abbey Crawford, a Wofford signee, totaled 13. Parker Hurd was right behind with 12 points and Jaelyn West finished with 10.

Jaycie Jenkins hit 10 of 13 free throws in a 24-point performance to lead Boone. Camryn Sarvis was the next high scorer with seven.

Eastside 61, Sullivan North 31

BRISTOL — Kaylee Yates tallied 18 points to lead the Lady Spartans to the interstate win over the Lady Raiders. Carrie Boyd collected 12 points and Anna Whited added nine.

Taylor Cochran and Lilly Crawford each finished with six to pace North.

Thomas Walker 48, Harlan, Ky. 33

HARLAN, Ky. — Lakin Burke and the Lady Pioneers took control in the second quarter to defeat Harlan Independent.

Burke scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the quarter, which Thomas Walker outscored Harlan by a 19-2 margin. Shelbie Fannon registered 16 points for the Lady Pioneers.

Ella Karst led the Kentucky bunch with 20 points.
