BLUFF CITY — The Sullivan East boys basketball team is in the midst of a long-distance love affair.

The Patriots knocked down 22 shots from the 3-point arc in a dominating 88-39 Three Rivers Conference victory over Happy Valley on Tuesday night.

“Our defense makes our offense go,” East coach John Dyer said after his team’s third league win in a row. “When we make that extra pass, our 3-point shot falls.

“I thought we played hard on both sides of the ball tonight. We have to continue to get better. Every district game is crucial and we want to win the district.”

Happy Valley (4-12, 1-4) simply had no way to counter the outside shooting by East (10-9, 4-1), which finished with three players in double figures.

Ethan Bradford scored 21 points, Dylan Bartley dropped in 20 and Braden Standbridge totaled 15. The trio combined for 15 3-point shots.

Alex Lunceford led the Warriors with 17 points.

East had its outside shooting touch early and sank nine 3s to grab a 35-9 advantage. Bartley made four straight 3s to help send the Patriots into halftime up 50-25.

Sullivan East’s girls won their fourth straight, topping Happy Valley 60-47. The Lady Patriots led by double digits then held off a comeback bid by the Lady Warriors.

Jenna Hare totaled a game-high 21 points and Hayley Grubb added 19 for Sullivan East (13-8, 4-1).

Happy Valley (12-7, 1-4) got 13 points from Olivia Absher, and Shalyn Whitson and Emma Blevins both scored eight.

Sullivan East had the hot hand early, leading 15-4 and 22-6 before a couple of 3-point makes by Blevins cut it to 24-12. The Lady Patriots led 30-16 at halftime.

Casey Campbell hit a pair of 3-pointers to pull the Lady Warriors within 11 in the third quarter, but East headed into the fourth up 46-30. Happy Valley went on a 7-0 run in the final period but couldn’t close the distance.

“It’s hard to go down and come back in this district,” Happy Valley coach Thomas Gouge said. “Sullivan East is a good basketball team and knows how to score pretty easily. It showed tonight how tough this district is.”
