Centennial Park (245 E. Main St.) in downtown Kingsport will come alive with the magic of the holiday season from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. that day for the second annual Santa’s Depot.
Last year, Santa’s Depot hosted more than 5,000 individuals and offered a multitude of child-centered activities — including live reindeer and the chance for youngsters to drop off letters to Santa — created to enhance the holiday experience while the crowd awaited the arrival of the Santa Train.
The stage was added for a performance by Santa and his special guests. Last year, those guests were singer Ricky Skaggs and his wife, Sharon White. This year, Santa will be joined on the the Santa Train by country duo Maddie & Tae. But the stage also allowed community dance companies, choral programs, bands and musicians to perform during Santa’s Depot. And that was a hit.
“The community loved seeing local children perform holiday numbers as they waited for the 75th Santa Train to roll into town,” event co-chair Robin Cleary said. “We are expecting an even larger crowd this year and hope to have more performances, as this event is in its second year.”
Keeping with the tradition of the Santa Train, Santa’s Depot is free to the community. Children are given an activity ticket that allows them to participate in the activity booths. Food trucks will be onsite with delicious offerings available for purchase.
“We still have a number of sponsorships available from ‘financial only’ contributions to ‘all-hands-on-deck’ interactive activity booth sponsorships,” event co-chair Amy Margaret McColl said. “This heartwarming event helps kick off the holiday season by bringing joy to the children of our region. An event of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without the support of local businesses and volunteers.”
Santa’s Depot’s presenting sponsors include: Appalachian Power, CSX, the Kingsport Chamber and Visit Kingsport.
