BRISTOL, Tenn. — At the request of 2nd District Attorney General Barry Staubus, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Friday night in Bristol.
Preliminary information indicates that shortly before midnight, officers with the Bristol Police Tennessee Department were at the 900 block of Georgia Avenue in an attempt to serve a warrant on a male subject.
Early reports indicate that individual attempted to assault one of the officers with an axe. During the altercation, one of the officers fired his weapon, striking the subject.
The preliminary investigation indicates one of the officers sustained a leg injury during the incident. The injured officer and the subject were both transported to a local hospital, where they are being treated for their injuries.
This continues to be an active and ongoing investigation.
TBI agents continue to gather relevant evidence, interviews and information. Throughout the investigative process, findings will be shared with the district attorney general for that office’s review and consideration.
In all investigations, TBI agents act solely as fact-finders.
The TBI does not identify officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective law enforcement agency.
