SURGOINSVILLE — A Kingsport man accused of swallowing a “green baggy” and his female passenger who allegedly had marijuana and pills concealed in her underwear were arrested after Hawkins County deputies responded to a report of a suspicious van stopped in the roadway last week.

Both are facing multiple charges including felony gun possession after two handguns were allegedly located in the vehicle.

Dustin Lynn Barrett, 35, 1124 Fairview Ave., Kingsport, is scheduled to appear in Hawkins County Sessions Court Monday on charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on a revoked license.

His passenger, Haley Dawn Powell, 19, 125 Wallen Town Road, Church Hill, will appear in Sessions Court Monday on two counts of possession of a firearm during commission of a dangerous felony, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and two counts of simple possession.

On the morning of Dec. 22, HCSO Deputy Stephanie Bolognese responded to a report of a van stopped on Stanley Valley Road near Surgoinsville.

Bolognese stated in her report that Barrett told her he had run out of gas, but Bolognese reportedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana while speaking to him.

Barrett allegedly admitted the smell was marijuana, but he said it was gone.

Upon being searched, Barrett became argumentative and attempted to conceal a green baggy in his left hand, Bolognese stated in her report.

“I asked to see the item, at which time he quickly stepped back and shoved it in his mouth,” Bolognese said. “I then placed him on the ground and attempted to remove the bag from his mouth when Deputy Will Mullins arrived and assisted.”

The van was searched and deputies allegedly located a meth pipe, 55 small baggies, a scale, three packaged needles, and two handguns.

Barrett was previously convicted of felony endangerment in Oklahoma.

He was evaluated at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital before being booked into jail.

Powell was searched during the investigation, at which time two baggies containing a total of 10 grams of marijuana, as well as 10 pills identified as gabapentin were discovered tucked in the underwear she was wearing.

Barrett’s bond was set at $5,000, while Powell’s bond was set at $50,000.
