MOUNT CARMEL — Police believe an elderly man may have suffered a medical emergency shortly before swerving off of Highway 11-W and striking a tree in Mount Carmel on Thursday afternoon.

Mount Carmel Police Department Chief Ken Lunsford Jr. said the elderly male was driving east on Highway 11-W around 1:30 p.m.  on Thursday when he swerved to the right, exited the highway and struck a tree.

The crash occurred on the west end of Mount Carmel directly across from the Rocket Center used car lot, and resulted in one lane of eastbound traffic being blocked for about an hour.

A landing zone was set up at the nearby National Guard Armory, and the man was flown via Wings Air Rescue to the Johnson City Medical Center.

Lunsford said the man’s medical issue appeared to be more pressing than any injuries he suffered in the crash.

The man’s identity wasn’t available.
