NICKELSVILLE — Scott County Sheriff’s Office investigators are still awaiting autopsy results on a man found seven months after his home burned down in April 2019.

Capt. J.C. Starnes said Thursday that the body of 55-year-old Craig Jonathan Pratt was found Nov. 29 by a neighbor not far from the site of the April 26 fire on Cowans Creek Road near Nickelsville.

According to Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller, state authorities closed their investigation into the fire after they could not determine its cause and origin. Pratt’s home and three vehicles were destroyed in the blaze.

Starnes said that witnesses last saw Pratt alive on the evening of April 25. Pratt’s remains were found about 100 yards away from the fire site by a neighbor and did not appear to have been burned, Starnes added.

The state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke has not yet released details about the cause or manner of Pratt’s death. Starnes said that the medical examiner told him full autopsy results were expected about eight to 12 weeks after the examination is completed.
