QUALIFICATIONS: Must love dogs and cats
WHERE: Bridge Home No-Kill Animal Rescue
BLOUNTVILLE — With a continuous stream of animals being brought to the no-kill shelter in Blountville, Bridge Home Director Regina Isenberg said she could really use some more volunteer help.
“We need more community helpers on a regular basis for the animals,” Isenberg said.
In addition to shelter workers and volunteers dealing with the steady stream of unwanted animals brought to Bridge Home, Isenberg said they also have to take care of the animals that are just dropped off in the shelter’s parking lot.
“They don’t even bring them in,” she said.
Animals dropped off are especially problematic for shelter workers, because they don’t have any history on them, they don’t know if they have had vaccinations, or if they were spayed or neutered.
Isenberg said Bridge Home’s resources are being stretched by taking care of animals that should go to other shelters in the area. For example, she said she recently took in some cats brought to Bridge Home by an individual who first took the animals to a public shelter in Sullivan County but was told at that shelter to take them to Isenberg instead.
PAYING THE BILLS
Both the city of Kingsport and Sullivan County operate taxpayer-supported animal shelters. Bridge Home receives no public funds and has to raise all of the money needed for its operations, including money for vet bills for every animal taken in.
“These bills have to be paid, and the animals have to eat,” Isenberg said. “We asked the city and county for $5,000 each to help us, but we haven’t heard a word from them.”
So in addition to volunteer help, Isenberg hopes animal lovers in the area will think of Bridge Home this Christmas season when considering monetary gifts or end-of-year tax-deductible donations.
She said any size of donation will make a difference.
“These animals are so innocent, and it is our responsibility as a community to take care of them,” she said.
