KINGSPORT — The Model City is looking for a few good police officers.

Beginning Monday and continuing through Jan. 19, the city will be accepting applications for the positions. The Kingsport Police Department is hoping to hire several new officers out of this process, filling existing and upcoming vacancies.

The current starting salary for a Police Officer Trainee is $16.32 per hour or $33,946 annually.

Tom Patton, KPD public information officer, said those interested in applying must submit a new application even if they have applied or tested with the department in the past.

Applicants must be United States citizens and either at least 21 years old or turning 21 by Aug. 5, 2020. Those interested in the positions should submit an application only once, as weeding out duplicates hampers efficiency.

All applications must be submitted online to www.GovernmentJobs.com/Careers/Kingsport.

Once the Jan. 19 deadline passes, Patton said, all applicants will receive a confirmation email, as well as a letter by traditional mail, containing further instructions regarding the upcoming Police Applicant Testing procedures, as well as the date that they are to report for testing.

There will not be a written exam as part of this testing process, Patton said.

PHYSICAL EVALUATION

All applicants will begin the testing process with a physical agility evaluation, which will take place on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5. Applicants will be divided alphabetically and assigned one of the two dates. The sessions will be conducted at Domtar Park (1414 Riverport Road).

The physical agility evaluation will consist of a timed one-mile run and a timed roughly one-quarter-mile obstacle course designed to measure fitness, strength, agility, and endurance. Candidates who successfully pass this evaluation will be reviewed for eligibility and suitability to advance to the interview panel phase.

Those ultimately selected will also be subject to a medical examination, psychological evaluation, and a thorough background investigation prior to actual hiring.

For additional information regarding the application process, call the City of Kingsport Human Resources Department at (423) 229-9401. For additional information regarding a law enforcement career at the KPD, contact Lt. Chris Tincher with the Professional Standards Unit at (423) 343-9805.
