The Rescue Fund provides holiday food vouchers to needy families screened by the Salvation Army to verify need. The dollar amount of the vouchers is based on the size of each family and the level of donations. The more money that is given, the more families the fund serves.
We see the Rescue Fund as representing the abiding faith and sacrifice of readers who have helped some of the most needy families in this region for more than four decades.
As most of us increasingly turn our thoughts to the coming holidays, thousands of our neighbors are doing without adequate clothing, shelter and food. That’s usually due to some misfortune, most often illness or injury. The Rescue Fund can’t change these circumstances directly, but it can provide food for hungry children, and sometimes just as importantly, it shows that someone cares.
All donations are listed in the newspaper, although donors may choose to remain anonymous. Many who have donated to the Rescue Fund through the years have done so in memory of a loved one.
We are privileged to conduct the program, but it is readers like you who make it possible, who bring a bit of holiday cheer to families desperately in need and who otherwise would have no hope of a happy holiday. During this special time of year it is our readers who bring a smile to the faces of children living in the depths of poverty.
By pulling together, we have faith that those with the means to do so will help to bring food — and hope — to the region’s neediest families this holiday season. It’s what we have to do because it’s what we are called to do. Speaking for those children, we thank you for your help and support once again.
A blessing given is a blessing received, and it is through those blessings that we hope to maintain, and perhaps even expand, the number of families reached by the Rescue Fund.
